Keyword Forensics Webinar with John Alexander

I attended a webinar today on Keyword Forensics with John Alexander of Search Engine Academy. I wanted to share with you some of the tips for doing keyword research from the webinar.

The way you think about keywords will define how good your keyword research will be. Most people are doing keyword research guessing at what they think will be good keywords. Instead let Wordtracker uncover new keyword opportunities for you.

To optimize your keyword research, explore how a single word is being used in multiple phrase clusters. You are looking for words that are fair to high search usage with moderate competition. The key factor is not how many searches are done but the opportunity to break into a market with qualified buyers.  This is why we look at the KEI value as the definitive marker for a good keyword.

What is KEI: Kei is a mathematical equation called the Keyword Effectiveness Index invented by Sumantra Roy. The higher the KEI , the easier it will be to optimize a site for. Think of KEI as your guideline

I’ll just take a moment of your time and share with you this shocking phone call I received a few minutes ago from Kevin George, a member of our SEO Community.

Website architecture is an important factor in SEO. The relationship between your pages or how they are linked together is an important consideration for SEO as well as usability for the visitor.
When creating your site navigation you will want to use this opportunity to tell the search engines and your users which pages are most important. Links on the main navigation are considered to be the most important pages. Pages that take 3 or more clicks to get to are not considered as important. The search engines will give those pages less authority and will in turn have less link popularity AKA “Link Juice”.
